Meta, the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, is revolutionizing the social network landscape by integrating synthetic characters generated by artificial intelligence (AI) into its main platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This innovation aims to make the user experience more engaging and interactive, especially for younger generations.

Synthetic Characters in Social Networks

Connor Hayes, Vice President of Generative AI Products at Meta, stated that these artificial characters will have complete profiles, including names, photos, and biographies, and will be able to autonomously generate and share content. The goal is to create an environment where users can interact with both real people and virtual entities, enriching online social interaction.

Opportunities and Challenges

The introduction of synthetic characters offers numerous opportunities, such as content enhancement and increased interactivity on the platforms. However, significant challenges also emerge. The presence of advanced chatbots could amplify the spread of misinformation or saturate the platforms with low-quality content, known as "slop." This term, included among the 2024 words by the Oxford Dictionary, refers to AI-generated content lacking originality and depth.

Ethical and Social Implications

The merging of digital reality and fiction raises significant ethical questions. A 2022 study highlighted how AI-generated profiles on social media can be difficult to distinguish from real ones, undermining trust in online interactions. Moreover, the creation of synthetic content could negatively affect the value of human relationships, replacing authenticity with artificial interactions.

Control Measures and Regulation

To address these challenges, Meta has announced its intention to clearly label AI-generated content, enabling users to easily recognize it. This initiative aims to ensure transparency and prevent the spread of misleading information. However, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on their implementation and users' ability to understand and interpret these labels.
