Perplexity launches a browser

Perplexity, a well-known AI-based search engine, has announced the development of its own browser named Comet. The company has opened a sign-up list for interested users, although the browser is not yet available and no indications have been given on when it will be. A spokesperson for Perplexity stated that the company aims to reinvent the browsing experience just as it did with search. Comet intends to offer innovative features that could attract users.

The new browser from Perplexity enters an already crowded market, with established competitors like Chrome and numerous alternative browsers. Among these is the upcoming Dia browser from The Browser Company, which also offers advanced AI-based features. Perplexity may rely on its search engine user base to quickly gain market share with Comet.

In recent months, Perplexity has expanded its product offerings, launching a new "deep research" tool to compete with those from OpenAI, Google, and xAI. In January, it introduced an AI assistant for Android and an API for AI search. Founded in 2022, Perplexity has raised over $500 million in capital and is valued at around $9 billion, performing over 100 million queries weekly. However, the company also faces legal challenges, as some publishers, such as News Corp and the New York Post, have sued Perplexity for alleged content theft. Despite this, Perplexity has claimed that it respects publisher content and offers a revenue-sharing program for publications.
